Supreme Novices Hurdle 2017 Results

The 2017 Cheltenham Festival got underway with its customary roar, and it was Cilaos Emery who took the field along in the early stages at a fierce gallop, as the heavily-fancied Melon stalked the leaders on the inside, with Ballyandy in the mid-division.

Ballyandy suffered a troubled passage during the race, as his momentum was halted in the middle of the race, and it was Melon, and the smooth-travelling River Wylde that caught the eye as the pace quickened.

However, turning for home it was the Gordon Elliott-trained Labaik, who eased into contention under his teenage rider Jack Kennedy, and the horse who has refused to race in the past swept past Melon, who was sent to win the race by Ruby Walsh, and caused a huge 25/1 boilover in the curtain-raiser.

Eventually winning by two-and-a-quarter lengths, Labaik handed the Irish a winning start to the meeting, with Melon finishing second for Willie Mullins, and it was River Wylde that completed the placings in what was a thrilling start to the meeting.
