Young Hoping To Master Kempton Ahead of Grand National Tilt

Friday 12th January 2018
Stable Talk

We always enjoy having winners on the flat, and it was fantastic to pick up our first one of the year at Kempton last Friday.

Happy Escape won the 1m handicap on just his 2nd start for the yard, and we very much hope there is a little bit more improvement to come.

Over the sticks, Rainy Day Dylan has always been a horse we have believed in, so it was great to see him produce the goods at Wincanton on Saturday in the 2m handicap hurdle. Tom O’Brien gave the horse a lovely ride and knows the owners, so it turned out to be the perfect combination at our local track.

Elsewhere, we were pleased with Niblawi at Doncaster on Tuesday as he finished 6th novices’ hurdle in soft ground. He was quicker in the air over the obstacles and continues to go in the right direction.

Moving on, Shee’s Lucky ran another excellent race but found one too good when finishing 2nd in the fillies’ juvenile hurdle at Ludlow on Wednesday. It is always slightly frustrating to bump into one, but the front two were clear of the field and our runner continues to improve.

This week we made three entries for the Sky Bet Chase at the end of the month with Pilgrims Bay, Carole’s Destrier and The Young Master all in contention for the Doncaster contest.

Of the three, Pilgrims Bay is the most likely runner at the Yorkshire venue before going back to Kempton for the Betbright Chase. The Peter Marsh at Haydock next weekend could be the target for Carole’s Destrier, with the Grand National at Aintree remaining the main goal in the spring.

Looking ahead to the weekend, we have three runners declared to run on Saturday.

Admiral Kid goes to Warwick for the 2m novices’ handicap hurdle, and we will be keeping our fingers crossed he can pick up some place money. It looks a competitive contest, but our horses are running well, and he should be able to do himself justice.

Bishops Court will have top weight in the 2m4f handicap chase at Kempton which is always a big ask, but goes there in great form. We were delighted with the way he won his race at Wincanton on Boxing Day, and hopefully there is a little bit more improvement to come.

Finally, The Young Master also heads to the Surrey venue for the 3m handicap chase, and it looks like a tough little six-runner contest. His 6th place finish in the Becher Chase last month was encouraging, and a return to the Grand National in April continues to be the ultimate target this season.
