The Galway Plate Is The Highlight Of the summer For Fans Of Jumps Racing

We are still a good few months away from the high quality jumps racing kicking into gear once again but this week does at least offer fans of the twig jumpers a chance to run the rule over some high class animals.

The Galway Plate Betting is always a terrific contest with the race the highlight of the seven day meeting at Ballybrit and once again we can look forward to a high quality edition of the famous contest.

First run all the way back in 1869, we have seen the Plate won by some famous horses in recent years with Carlingford Lough, Road To Riches and Balko Des Flos just three of the names to have picked up the win since 2013. We can once again look forward to another high class winner in 2019 with a number of well known animals engaged for the 2m6f contest from some of the biggest yards in the sport, including Willie Mullins, Gordon Elliott and Paul Nicholls.

It is Elliott who has the favourite at the time of writing with Borice (7/1) the leading contender for the top trainer after two quick wins appear to have put him spot on for the latest assignment. The 8-year-old will need more again on just his 5th start since coming over from France but there has been confidence behind him in the market which is something of a tip in itself. Mengli Khan (10/1) for the same trainer is a class act as he showed when 3rd in the JLT at the Cheltenham Festival for Elliott and would have a chance, while Coney Island (12/1) is another class act as proven by a Grade 1 success as a novice and few would be surprised if the JP McManus owned horse got his head in front at Galway.

The Willie Mullins trained Yorkhill looks to be gone at the game based on his recent starts but he would be much the best of these if he can find his top form once again which ensures he will be a story either way on Wednesday evening.

The British raiders always add a touch of spice to a race like the Galway Plate and we have one or two hugely interesting runners heading over from the UK this season.

The Paul Nicholls trained Black Corton will have plenty on his plate in terms of his mark but he had a tune up at Ascot last time out and with Bryony Frost on board the Grade 1 winning novice chaser, there is likely to be more than a few bets on the popular 8-year-old.

Also heading over the Irish Sea is the Dan Skelton trained AZZURI who has a genuine chance of giving the Lodge Hill handler one of the biggest wins of his relatively short training career. The 7-year-old was transformed after a wind op to scoot up at Ayr last time out and there looked to be more to come on that basis for a horse that appears to be versatile in terms of ground conditions underfoot.

The trip remains a slight unknown for fans of Azzuri but the horse is reportedly going well at home and that coupled with that 3ye-catching run at Ayr last time out ensures that the British raider is a lovely each-way punt at around 14/1* with Bet Victor and a number of other firms
