Usual Suspects In Line For 2012 National Hunt Jockey Of The Year

Wednesday 5th December 2012
Ruby Walsh

2012 has been a great year for National Hunt Racing so far and much of that credit has to go to the brilliant jockeys, who risk injury every day of their working lives. The men and women who spend their careers as jump jockeys are some of the strongest and best sports people in the country and deserve to be recognised. To that end, we at www.jumpsracing.co.uk have picked out the five jockeys who we believe have done enough to deserve to be nominated for our 2012 National Hunt Jockey Of The Year Award.

We have taken a close look at the jockeys who have picked up the most winners as well as those who always seem to produce their best for the big grade 1 races. We have selected the five nominees and we want you to tell us who you think deserves to pick up the award for being the best Jockey of the Year 2012.

A P McCoy

Ap Mccoy
Surprise, surprise. Our first nominee is the incomparable, AP McCoy, who, continues to set records for his excellence in the irons. McCoy claimed no less than 199 winners last season to win his 17th Champion Jockey Title in the UK with only injury stopping his progress down the years. As well claiming the Championship again McCoy also picked up his second win in the Cheltenham Gold Cup back in March when Synchronised stayed on the best to claim a famous win at the Festival. He has started this season in the same form to pull well clear in the Jockeys Championship once again, a ttitle he has won every year since the 1995/1996 season!

Ruby Walsh

Ruby Walsh
Ruby Walsh is never going to be Champion Jockey in the UK as he splits his time with rides for Willie Mullins in Ireland but he is always the man to follow in the big races. He is a multiple Irish Champion Jockey at home but he is mainly used for the big Saturday races in the UK for the Champion Trainer, Paul Nicholls, and that has certainly been the case so far in 2012. He had two big wins at the 2012 Cheltenham Festival on board Quevega in the Mares race and on board the great Big Buck's in the World Hurdle. Walsh may not be able to compare with McCoy when it comes to the quantity of winners but the quality of his wins are undoubted and he remains a top jock!

Barry Geraghty

Barry Geraghty
The rise of Nicky Henderson over the past five years has ensured that his stable jockey, Barry Geraghty, has continued to grow into one of the best in the business. Geraghty is always there for the big winners on the big days and he had a Cheltenham Festival to remember back in March. Geraghty rode five winners during the Festival including three on the bounce on day two as Simonsig, Bobs Worth and Finians Rainbow all scored for the team. Its also worth noting Geraghty for his Hennessy Gold Cup win on Bobs Worth at Newbury recently and his flourishing partnership with Arkle Chase winner Sprinter Sacre, who looks set to provide him with more big race wins in the coming months.

Richard Johnson

Richard Johnson
Richard Johnson has played second fiddle to A P McCoy for so many years now but his skill as a jockey remains second to none. Johnson has finished second in the Jockeys Championship on countless occasions and that was once again the case in 2011/12 with the Philip Hobbs jockey racking up an impressive 153 winners at  strike rate of 18%. There was just the one success for Johnson at the Cheltenham Festival back in March with the game Balthazar King winning the Cross Country Chase after an excellent ride. Johnson is one of the quiet guys of the sport but he has been consistently amongst the best in the business for years has been just that once again in 2012, he more than deserves his place on our list of nominees.

Jason Maguire

Jason Maguire
Maguire is considered by many to be one of most improved jockeys in the sport over the past couple of years and he has had a stellar 2012 so far. The Irish Jockey has flourished under his partnership with trainer Donald McCain Jnr and together they have made massive strides over the past 12 months or so. Maguire had a good Cheltenham Festival back in March with Cinders And Ashes and Son Of Flicka giving him two famous wins at the biggest meeting of them all. He also gave Overturn a cracking ride in the Champion Hurdle to guide the horse to second place as he once again proved he was a man to follow in the big races. Last season was a brilliant one for Maguire as he racked up a career best 144 wins at a strike rate of 23% and he has started this winter in a similar vain.
