The William Hill Trophy Handicap produced one of the most exciting races of the Cheltenham Festival last year when Wichita Lineman finished like a steam train to claim the win under one of the great rides from AP McCoy. Hopefully we will see a repeat of that excitement in 2010 on the first day of the Festival and looking at the runners there is every chance we could be in for another classic renewal. There is usually a large field for the William Hill Trophy making it tough for punters but at the same time there is some good value to be had so has the potential to be very rewarding.
Over the past few days as we get close to the Cheltenham Festival money has continued to come for The Package and he will go into the race as one of the favourites to take the win. We have not seen him since he won at Cheltenham before Christmas but the punters are backing him to repeat the tick in the William Hill Trophy. He has though only won three races in his career which might be a worry but the perception is that he is on an upwards curve and if that continues at the Festival he will be tough to beat. The horse is trained by David Pipe and he is sure to have him right for a real assault on the William Hill Trophy Handicap on day 1 of the Festival as the trainer looks to get his week off to a winning start.
This is by no means a one horse race though with the William Hill Trophy Handicap Odds telling us that there a number of runners who will have great chances in the race. Bensalem has to be the big danger for The Package with the Alan King horse a class operator as he has proved over the past couple of seasons. Last time out he produced an excellent run to come in second behind Diamond Harry at Newbury in a good field. If he can produce that form here then he will have every chance of claiming the win. Calgary Bay has been to the Cheltenham Festival on a number of occasions and should be in the frame if he takes his best form into the race. His last run was an impressive win at Doncaster in December and on that form should have good each/way chances in this tight looking race. This will be an exciting race for viewers with a big field going at a fast and furious pace and it could well be the highlight of the card on Tuesday at Cheltenham.
