Sizing John was a superb winner of the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup, as the 7/1 shot produced a sensational round of jumping to outclass his rivals to beat the staying-on Minella Rocco by two-and-three-quarter lengths, with Native River back in third in a race that saw Cue Card fall at the third last fence for the second year in a row.
Native River was sent to the front by Richard Johnson from the outset, and he kept an honest gallop throughout the race, as the likes of Djakadam and Cue Card maintained a position off the pace, but the latter was to suffer the same fate as 12 months ago as he failed to get over the third last, but turning for home it was Sizing John who caught the eye, as he coasted to the front for Robbie Power, and a cracking leap at the final fence saw him seal the race, and he stormed up the hill to land Gold Cup glory.
Djakadam was unable to hand Willie Mullins his third win on the final day of the Cheltenham Festival, as he tired again up the hill to finish fourth, and it was Minella Rocco who finished off the best of his rivals, as he nailed Native River in the shadow of the post to bag second.
However, it was all about Sizing John, who had been stepped up in trip this season, and he oozed class throughout the race, and was a cut above his rivals in what was a fabulous performance from the Irish raider.
