Sizing Europe has been one of the most successful Cheltenham Festival horses of recent times and connections are planning one last hurrah for one of the most popular chasers in Ireland. The Henry De Bromhead 11 year old is a dual Festival winner of the Arkle (2010) and the Champion Chase (2011) during his career but his target for the 2013 Festival remains unclear. The horse is currently entered for the Champion Chase, the Ryanair Chase and the Gold Cup with connections expected to wait to the last minute before deciding where he will go.
Traditionally Sizing Europe has been a two mile chaser but following the emergence of Sprinter Sacre coupled with his advancing years, it is more than possible that we will see Sizing Europe stepped up at this season's Festival. De Bromhead has long been of the opinion that the horse stays three miles which does bring the Gold Cup into contention while the 2m 5f Ryanair Chase is perhaps the most likely target at this stage. All of this comes after the horse won yet another Grade 1 race at the weekend when he trounced his rivals to win the Tied Cottage Chase over two miles for the second year in-a-row.
Last season we saw Sizing Europe narrowly beaten in the Queen Mother Champion Chase by Finians Rainbow but he once again showed he normally saves his best for Prestbury Park. Taking that into account Sizing Europe is sure to be a major contender in whatever race his conenctions decide to send him to this season. Most would agree that it is hard to see any horse beating Sprinter Sacre in the Champion Chase this season with the Ryanair looking a little bit more open at this stage.
The Gold Cup on the other hand appears to be a more unlikely aim for Sizing Europe with the hill likely to test Sizing Europe's stamina to the max. Whichever route the horse takes he is sure to put up a strong showing as he always does when it matters in the Spring. He has won all four of his starts this season and despite approaching the twilight of his career it appears that Sizing Europe could be set to play yet another key role in one of the big Cheltenham Festival races.
