Recession Proof To Go Straight To Supreme Novices Hurdle at Festival

Thursday 3rd March 2011

The highly impressive Recession Proof will go straight to the Supreme Novices Hurdle at the Festival rather than taking in the Imperial Cup at Sandown Park three days before Cheltenham. Trainer John Quinn was considering the Imperial for Recession Proof after he won the Totesport Trophy so well at Newbury on his last start, but it has been considered too risky for him and he will now go straight to Cheltenham. The horse has been well backed for the first race of the Festival for some time now with three successive wins to his name over the past few months; those performances have earned him a quote of around 9/1 with most bookmakers for the Supreme. His win in the Totesport Trophy last time out was particularly impressive on soft ground and although it will be a step up for him at Cheltenham, he seems to be an improving type and one that the others must respect. It is also worth noting that should Recession Proof not win the Supreme and come out of the race healthy, there is every chance we could see him run in the County Handicap Hurdle later in the week at Cheltenham.

The Supreme Novices Hurdle is many punters favourite race of the entire Festival with a massive roar signalling the start of the week as the tape comes up, it gives us a chance to see some stars of the future and the 2011 race is looking like a great renewal. There tends to be a well backed favourite for the Supreme and that is the case this year with the Champion Bumper winner from last season Cue Card all the rage. The Colin Tizzard horse has looked by far the best Novice over hurdles this season and punters will no doubt be praying he scores for them to get the Cheltenham Festival off to a positive start. Bookmakers meanwhile will be hoping they can get Cue Card beaten in the Supreme as they did with Dunguib last season, which set the tone for a great week for the bookies. As well as Cue Card and Recession Proof, there are a number of other contenders in the Supreme with Nicky Henderson in particular holding a strong hand, he has both Spirit Son and Sprinter Sacre in the field and both look top class types.
