Punters Can Put Their Cap On Cloth For Wide Open Scottish Grand National At Ayr

The Scottish Grand National At Ayr This Weekend Is Set For Another Cracking Race

The Aintree version may now already be in the rear view mirror but the big race handicap chase action continues this weekend with the Scottish Grand National Odds taking centre stage.

The stellar meeting of the season at the brilliant Ayr race track, the Scottish National is always a major betting event as punters clamber for all the inside info on one of the key races of the jumps calendar.

There is plenty of prize money on offer and that means the best trainers in the UK are always attracted to the Grade 3 contest.

The field this season is littered with top class animals with a number of form lines clashing in the 4m race which always offers horses a stern test of both their stamina and jumping credentials.

The winner will enter a famous roll of honour of horses but there isn't a clear favourite this year with the market looking extremely open at the time of writing. There are four runners fighting it out at the head of the market with Beware The Bear, Dingo Dollar, Big River and Vintage Clouds the quartet most fancied by the punters.

Vintage Clouds could be the one that attracts the most support on the day of the race having been well fancied in Liverpool last weekend only to fall at the first fence.

There is plenty of value to be found further down the betting though with Doing Fine one of interest at big prices for trainer Neil Mulholland. The 11-year-old can get behind in his races but he plugged on well to finish 4th in the same contest in 2018 and after a wind op and off of a pound less, there is no reason why he can't run on into a place once again.

Doing Fine is certainly worth considering at small stakes and the same can be said of CLOTH CAP who comes into this race as a highly interesting contender for Jonjo O'Neill.

The 7-year-old arrives north of the border as an unexposed chaser who should be suited to the step up in trip for an owner who has had major success in the past in the Aintree National.

The Jonjo O'Neill trained chaser has been off since November having impressed on good ground with two quick wins at Catterick and Stratford. Clearly kept fresh for a spring campaign on better ground, connections will be hoping there is more to come on just his 4th start over fences and that does make him an interesting prospect for each-way punters.

Novices have proven they can run well in Scottish National in the past and owner Trevor Hemmings will be hoping that Cloth Cap can be his latest staying handicap chaser to make up into a potential Aintree horse. Ballabriggs, Many Clouds and Hedgehunter all won the English National in the famous green and gold silks and while Cloth Cap has a long way to go to get anywhere near that level, a positive run at Ayr this weekend could be the first step on the ladder.

Good ground will suit both Cloth Cap and Doing Fine this weekend and with the weather set fair for the highlight of the jumps season north of the border, we can go to war with two exciting each-way picks
