The entries for the 2010 Gold Cup were announced today with a 27 in the line up for the premier race on the horse racing calendar. Paul Nicholls once again has the key contenders in the race with Kauto Star looking for his third victory in the race and Denman who won the Gold Cup in 2008 and was runner up in 2009. In the entries Nicholls also has What A Friend, Taranis, My Will and Tricky Trickster on stand by should either of his main hopes get injured as it is probably unlikely that What A Friend will take part if the stable stars turn up on the day.
When considering those that may cause an upset then you have to look at Imperial Commander, who took the Grade One Ryanair Chase at The Festival last season and went down by a nose to Kauto Star in the Grade One Betfair Chase at Haydock Park in November. A potential Irish challenge of eight is headed by the Willie Mullins-trained pair of Cooldine, successful in last season’s Grade One RSA Chase, and the unexposed Glencove Marina.
Without question this race will be the highlight of the Cheltenham Festival and we can all look forward to it as what is probably going to be the highlight of the season.
