Outlander A Major Player In RSA Chase And Could Hand Mullins More Success

Tuesday 26th January 2016

In the second instalment of our Cheltenham Festival ante-post focus, we opt to focus microscopically on the RSA Chase, which is a race that sees No More Heroes and More Of That dominating the head of the betting, but we feel that a Willie Mullins-trained raider could have been overlooked in the betting and we have a sparkling double-figured price to go to battle with.

Faultless Heroes Heads Betting From Former World Hurdle Champion

Gordon Elliott's No More Heroes has made a serene switch to the novice chasing game and the seven-year-old, who was an excellent third in the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle last season, has breezed to a triumvirate of facile victories over the larger obstacles, which has seen him launch to a best-priced 3/1 favourite with Betfair for the 2016 RSA Chase.

A graceful jumper, No More Heroes has looked every bit an RSA type, as his two-and-a-half length success in the Drinmore Novice Chase was followed by an equally impressive nine-length drubbing of Rule The World in the Neville Hotels Novice Chase, as he recorded back-to-back Grade 1 wins.

Whilst he tasted success on his first start over fences on good ground in October, No More Heroes has predominantly sparkled on rain-softened going, so if conditions were to be significantly quicker come March 16 when he heads to the 3m start for the RSA, then he will have to show he can adapt, and at 3/1 at the time of writing, 9/4 in a place, No More Heroes is not one to back at the odds, albeit he deserves to be a prominent figure in the betting.

Jonjo O'Neill knows what it takes to saddle an RSA Chase winner, having orchestrated Albertas Run's success in the race in 2008 and the Jackdaws Castle supremo will unleash the former Ladbrokes World Hurdle winner More Of That, who is 5/1 with William Hill Bookmakers.

Having lowered the colours of Annie Power in the 2014 World Hurdle, More Of That then suffered a frustrating year off the track, but the seven-year-old propelled back into the limelight with a mightily-impressive two-and-a-half length success over As De Mee at Cheltenham's Open meeting, whilst he followed that with an equally accomplished win over fences at the International meeting at Prestbury Park in December.

Many would argue that he hasn't beaten top quality rivals in his two novice chase wins, but he has shown a real zest for the chasing game and with proven form on quicker ground he could well be the attractive betting proposition with seven weeks to go until the Greatest Show on Turf.

Outlander The Pick From Mullins Battalion

Like many of the novice events at the 2016 Cheltenham Festival, Willie Mullins has a real catalogue of class acts that he can he deal, but the ace in the pack that has hardly been given any coverage is the progressive Outlander, who at 25/1 with Paddy Power is a sensational ante-post bet.

A twelve-length sixth to Windsor Park in the Neptune Novices' Hurdle last season, Outlander followed that up with defeats to Shaneshill and Nichols Canyon over timber, but he has blossomed on his two starts over fences and he could well be a Mullins-trained that flies under the radar heading into this year's GL50 four-day jamboree.

He downed stablemate Avant Tout in a Grade 2 novice chase at Limerick over Christmas, but that 2m 3f trip would've been a little bit on the sharp side and his rider that day David Mullins has already voiced his confidence of his chances in the RSA Chase, and with some firms opting to air on the side of caution at 14/1, the 25/1 available is a eye-bulging price and can be an attractive each-way play for many and will safely make it into our 2016 Cheltenham Festival Ante-Post Porfolio.

Mullins' embarrassment of riches becomes apparent when scouring through the ante-post betting and Killultagh Vic is one of the real class acts at the Closutton stable, but he is destined for the JLT Novices' Chase and is not worth backing with out the safety net of Non Runner No Bet, whilst Roi Des Francs and Black Hercules, both 20/1 with Paddy Power, could both take their chance in the four-miler and are worth avoiding here.

Pont Alexandre may take his chance in the RSA, and is of interest at 20/1 with Betfred, but injury has plagued his career and he was beaten by the aformentioned Roi Des Francs last time out, and he is one to be wary of in the lead-up to the race.

Northern Hopes Lie With Seeyouatmidnight

Sandy Thomson's Seeyouatmidnight kicked off the New Year with a fine victory over Blaklion in the Dipper Novices' Chase at Cheltenham on New Year's Day and following that Grade 2 event it sees the former etched in as a 14/1 shot for the RSA Chase, whilst the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained latter is available at 16/1 with most firms.

The pair drew well clear of their rivals that day and could both play their part in the RSA and Seeyouatmidnight will be a prominent flag-bearer for the northern charge at this year's festival, but the eight-year-old who was comfortably beaten in last season's Ladbrokes World Hurdle may just struggle to deal with some classier rivals here, and it wouldn't be surprising if Blaklion turned that Cheltenham form around come the second day of the festival.
