The Cheltenham Festival is now a matter of weeks away and one of the biggest talking points at the moment regards the Prestbury Park target for a certain Vautour. The Willie Mullins trained Chaser is a bona-fide equine superstar as a former winner of the Supreme Novices Hurdle and the JLT Novices Chase and plenty of opinions and discussions continue to surround his March aim.
Ever since Vautour won the JLT last March, all the talk has been about aiming the horse at the Gold Cup abut after he was narrowly beaten by Cue Card in the King George, there is now talk that he could drop back down in trip. We thought we would ask our social media followers which race Vautour should run in at the Cheltenham Festival and the results were fascinating;
With almost 1500 votes cast, there was just 1% between the Gold Cup and the Ryanair Chase with the 2m5f contest coming out on top by the narrowest margin. Some have even suggested that Vautour could drop back all the way to 2m with 19% voting for the horse to run in the Queen Mother Champion Chase.
As it stands, Vautour is towards the head of the market for all three contests although his Ryanair price of 13/8 with Sky Bet suggests that could be his target. The same trainer and owner also have Djakadam in the Gold Cup mix which could influence their decision as they mull over whether or not to let their horses take each other on in the blue riband contest.
Will Willie Mullins want as many darts as possible at the Gold Cup considering he has never won it or would rather send him to the Ryanair Chase for an easier assignment? Time will tell.
