Hurricane Fly trained by Willie Mullins justified 11/4 favouritism by winning the Champion Hurdle after a great battle with Peddlers Cross then went almost all the way to the line. It was the first time jockey, Ruby Walsh had ridden the winner of the race but he knew he had been in a battle royal with Jason Maguire on ‘Peddlers’. The two pulled away from the rest after a blistering pace was set by Overturn going a few lengths clear of Oscar Whisky in third place after jumping the last, but it was the 'Hurricane' who finished the stronger holding on to win by a half length. Menorah who went off second favourite, finished out of the places after failing to come up the hill as well as would have been expected.
Peddlers Cross lost nothing in defeat but he was most certainly beaten by a marginally better horse on the day. Hurricane Fly has been installed as the 7/2 favourite to win the race next year and on this evidence it might be a wise idea to get on him now.
