The Aintree Grand National 2019 isn’t far away and we have asked Steve Ryder to give a selection in every race on Day 2 of the Aintree Festival.

1:45 Merseyrail Handicap Hurdle

Brio Conti was a huge eyecatcher in the Coral Cup at the Cheltenham Festival when looking the winner turning from home. He jumped the second last flight in the lead but just failed to stay the 2m5f up the hill on soft ground. This drop back to 2m4f on a flat track on better ground looks sure to suit even after a 2lb rise in the handicap.

He won well at Ascot in February off a mark of 141 and at around 8/1 with extra places available, Brio Conti looks a good each way selection for the race.

2:20 Betway Top Novices’ Hurdle

Aramon is the highest rated in the field with an official rating of 152 and will be suited by the return to better ground in this race. He won a Grade 3 Novice hurdle at Navan in November before winning the Grade 1 Future Champions Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown in December.

The form of his head second behind Klassical Dream at the Dublin Racing Festival was boosted with the winner bolting up in the Supreme Novices Hurdle where Aramon just appeared to fail to get up the hill on the soft ground. He eventually faded into 6th behind the reopposing Itchy Feet and Felix Desjy but can reverse that form back on better ground here.

2:50 Betway Mildmay Novices’ Chase

RSA Chase winner Topofthegame deserves to be favourite for this race but faces a tough opponent in Lostintranslation. Lostintranslation bumped into La Bague Au Roi on his first two starts over fences before winning the Grade 2 Dipper Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham on New Years Day. He ran extremely well to finish 2nd in the JLT Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham where he just lost out to Defi Du Seuil after the last.

Lostintranslation looks the only danger to Topofthegame in this race and I would even consider backing him each way at around 7/2.

3:25 JLT (Melling) Chase

This is a rematch of last year when Politologue beat Min by a neck but I think that result can be reversed this season. Min made a faultless start to the season with a win in the John Durkan Chase before an easy win in the Dublin Chase when dropping back to 2 miles. He looked the only danger on paper to Altior in the Champion Chase but never looked happy at any stage and can be forgiven that effort. If Min bounces back to the form of his two victories this season then he should prove hard to beat.

4:05 Randox Health Topham Handicap Chase

San Benedeto won the Grade 1 Doom Bar Maghull Novices’ Chase at this meeting in 2017 and benefited from a drop in the handicap to win at Newbury last time. That was off a mark of only 147 and he won well by 2 ¼ lengths at the finish meaning he has been raised 7lb back up to a mark of 154. He has a good relationship with Nick Schofield and if he takes well to the fences then he could run well at around 20/1.

4:40 Doom Bar Sefton Novices’ Hurdle

It seems a strange decision by connections to step Champ up in trip to 3 miles for this race given how keen he travels in his races. He is probably the most talented horse in the line-up but I would have concerns with him over this trip. The Warren Greatrex trained Emitom is the unknown quantity of the race given that he is unbeaten in all of his five starts. He won a Novices’ Hurdle at Newbury on his last start under a double penalty and although he needs to prove he is up to Grade 1 class, he shouldn’t have any issues with the step up to 3 miles.

At the time of writing there is no betting available on the race but I am thrilled to see Santa Rossa declared for the race. She was sent off an unfancied 25/1 shot on debut but won easily by over 3 lengths at the finish. She was stepped up to Grade 2 company at Leopardstown and won impressively again under Finian Maguire. The jockey comes over from Ireland to retain the partnership and in receipt of 3lb from the boys in this race, I am confident she will run well.
