Douvan Romps To Emphatic Supreme Win For Mullins And Walsh

Tuesday 10th March 2015

Douvan was an emphatic four-and-a-half length winner of the Supreme Novices' Hurdle, as the well-fancied 2/1 favourite propelled clear of his rivals in the closing stages to hand Willie Mullins and Ruby Walsh their first win of the 2015 Cheltenham Festival, and with such an embarrassment of riches available to that deadly duo on day one, who's to say it won't be their last win on the opening day of the Prestbury Park showpiece.

Walsh was forced to keep his mount in check in the early stages of the Supreme, as the five-year-old was pretty keen over the first two flights, but having stalked the leaders the Emerald Isle hotpot was always travelling sweetly for Walsh and with his rivals beginning to come off the bridle he gradually took control.

Nicky Henderson's L'ami Serge, who was regarded as the main danger to Douvan, suffered no luck in running, as he first had to avoid the falling Seedling down the back straight, before finding continual traffic problems, and he was unable to land a blow.

Turning for home, Douvan was sent to the front by a motionless Walsh as he eye-balled Sizing John and Shaneshill, but whilst that duo struggled to quicken in the last couple of furlongs, the well-backed jolly found another gear and duly launched up the straight to a cocophony of noise from the jam-packed Prestbury Park stands.
