We may only be a matter of weeks into the new National Hunt season but already we are starting to garner some key clues for the big championship races at the Cheltenham festival. One of the first big names of the season to have run was the impressive Cue Card who made his debut over fences at Chepstow and claimed the win in impressive fashion. There have been big things expected of the Colin Tizzard trained horse ever since he won the Champion Bumper at the Festival back in 2010 and he looks to be a real contender over fences. He went into the Supreme Novices Hurdle as hot favourite last season but could only manage fourth place, that was a disappointing run but he has shown enough potential to be made one of the favourites for the Arkle.
Cue Card made his chasing debut in the Mobile Novices Chase at Chepstow and duly hacked up to the delight of connections. It was not the strongest field but he showed enough class to be cut for the Arkle Chase and he looks to be a real contender in the Novice Chase division this season. The Arkle could well be a hot renewal this season as we see the likes of Supreme Novices winner Al Ferof, Peddlers Cross and Menorah all going Novice Chasing along with Cue Card. The Cheltenham Festival is some way off but many of the big yards will be looking to get a big early run into their stars over the next few weeks as they look to map out their campaigns. Cue Card certainly looks like a horse to follow this season after his impressive debut at Chepstow and while it is too early to make any certain predictions it would be no surprise to see him featuring at the Festival in March.
