Cue Card and Thistlecrack Set For Titanic King George Battle

Thursday 22nd December 2016

Racing fans will have to wait an extra day for their best Christmas present this year with the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park on Boxing Day set to be a real festive treat.

The news came through at the start of the week that Thistlecrack will be entered for the race, despite his novice status, and a clash with illustrious stable-mate and defending Champion Cue Card is a truly mouthwatering prospect.

With the race fast approaching, we take a closer look at the main challengers for one of the biggest races in our sport.

Cue Card

What a horse this lad has been. It is hard to believe that it almost seven years ago that we saw him scoot up the hill at Cheltenham to win the Champion Bumper but Cue Card is still going strong, despite the fact he is just about to turn eleven.

Since that Champion Bumper win we have seen the Colin Tizzard trained horse win a Ryanair Chase, three Betfair Chase's and a King George among many others.

It really has been a stellar career and he looked as good as ever last month as he bounced back to win the Betfair Chase and apart from his advancing age, it is difficult to find holed with the horse. He chased down Vautour to win the King George last year and plenty of his fans are still ruing his fall three out in the Gold Cup when looking like the winner that day.

Thistlecrack

Step forward the most exciting horse in training.

A stunning winner of the World Hurdle, Thistlecrack has won three novice chases on the spin this season but connections have decided to throw him in the deep end.

He has swatted away all of the opposition he has faced so far over fences and apart from one or two iffy jumps at Cheltenham, he has so far looked the part. Rising nine, the owners of Thistlecrack have clearly made a decision to throw him in with the big boys now rather than wait another year and it will be a massive test for him.

There is no doubting the engine of Thistlecrack and his potential ceiling is sky high which is what makes this clash so exciting. He has loads to find on the official ratings with Cue Card but plenty believe he will do just that on Boxing Day and punters will need to make their choice.

Thistlecrack is yet to be put under any pressure over fences and how he copes with that at Kempton will decide the outcome.

Anything Else?

The top two look to have this one in the bag with only five taking them on and barring falls, it is hard to see anyone breaking the Tizzard monopoly.

Silviniaco Conti is a two-time winner of the King George and will set a decent gallop in front but his form of late has been well below his best and based on his run in the Betfair Chase, it is hard to see him troubling the market leaders.

Josses Hill has been supplemented by Nicky Henderson which is an interesting move and there is no doubt he is a classy animal. Good enough to chase home Vautour in a Supreme, he easily beat Tea For Two, who re-opposes here, in the Peterborough Chase last time out and although he won't harm the top two if they jump, he could run well.

Road To Riches has been a good chaser in his time and would have an each-way chase on his best form but he has struggled lately which is a worry, whilst Roi Des Francs is a nice horse in his own right but won't be good enough in this.
