One of the highest rated hurdlers in years to go Chasing, Grands Crus, made his debut over the bigger obstacles at the weekend and he duly hacked up to delight connections. It is worth noting that Grands Crus is the only hurdler to get anywhere near the great Big Bucks over hurdles and if he can carry that form into his chasing career we could be looking at a real star. He has made a good start over fences as he won the Steel Plate and Sections Novices Chase in style, his jumping was impressive and he stayed on as we knew he would to win as he liked. It was billed as a clash with the excellent Cue Card but the Colin Tizzard horse unseated his jockey leaving Grands Crus to win with the likes of Zaynar and Champion Court left trailing. The style of his win was particularly impressive and connections will be hoping he lives up to recent winners of the same race who include the likes of Denman and Imperial Commander.
At this stage the most likely target for Grands Crus at the Cheltenham Festival is the RSA Chase which is the usual route for the three mile novices and it is hard to argue with his current postilion as ante-post favourite. It is not beyond the realms of possibility though that Grands Crus could also get an entry into the Gold cup with there being a chance he could skip the novice route altogether. Whichever way connections decide to go with Grands Crus it will be a fascinating season with the grey horse now established as one of the most exciting chasers in the country and at just six he could still be improving. Punters have been looking for a horse to challenge Long Run in the Gold Cup division and whether it is this season or next, we may have found a horse who could do just that.
