Conti The Pick For Betfair Chase At Haydock

Friday 20th November 2015

The Betfair Chase is always one of the very best early season races for the staying chasers and once again it has attracted a small but select field of runners. Five will go down to post, including two previous winners, and all five have top class form in the book ahead of this one.

Conti Going For A Hat-Trick

The warm favourite for the Betfair Chase this season is the brilliant Silviniaco Conti who has been one of the very best horses in training for a few years now. He might not be able to do it at Cheltenham but Silviniaco Conti has been top class everywhere else during his career, including Haydock Park.

Silviniaco Conti won this race in 2012 and again last year and the conditions of the race certainly do seem to suit him at this time of year. A guaranteed stayer and a rock solid jumper, Silviniaco Conti goes for a trainer who has won this race six times before and it is hard to pick holes in him.

Paul Nicholls sent the horse to Kempton recently for a Pertemps Hurdle race to blow out the cobwebs and that should have done him the world of good as he gets a little older. The 9-year-old is clearly on target for the defence of his King George crown on Boxing Day and punters who fancy him to win the Betfair Chase for a third time can currently get a price of 4/5 with Ladbrokes.

Strong Field Against The Favourite

The main threat to Silviniaco Conti will surely come from the brilliant Cue Card, who like the favourite has been one of the best horses in training over the past five years or so. The Colin Tizzard trained chaser is a former winner of the Champion Bumper, a Ryanair Chase winner and the Betfair Chase itself and deserves to be respected.

Cue Card had a poor year last year but looked almost as good as ever recently when winning the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby on seasonal debut and connections are convinced he is back to his best. Taking on Silviniaco Conti over 3m on testing ground is a big ask for any horse and there would be a slight worry about Cue Card's stamina but he is full of class and cannot be ignored at a fair price of 3/1 with Paddy Power.

David Pipe runs both Dynaste and Ballynagour and both are more than entitled to run in this race. Dynaste is another former Ryanair winner and has been placed in a Betfair Chase before, while Ballynagour has form just behind Silviniaco Conti from the Betfred Bowl at Aintree and is perhaps the preferred of the two from Pond House.

Conti Has To Be The Pick

Cue Card would make for a very attractive bet in this race had the ground come up better but under the circumstances it is very hard to back against Silviniaco Conti. A strong galloper who jumps well, Silviniaco Conti is likely to stretch the stamina of Cue Card with Ballynagour the horse that could outrun his price but the favourite is the most likely winner.

Tip - Silviniaco Conti to win the Betfair Chase @ 4/5 with Ladbrokes
