Coneygree Among Magnificent Betfair Chase Seven

Thursday 17th November 2016

2015 Gold Cup winner Coneygree is the headline name among a list of seven entries for the Betfair Chase at Haydock Park on Saturday. Not seen since winning in impressive style at Carlisle over a year ago, the 9YO is reported to have fully recovered from injury and is set to take his place in the field.

Coneygree was the first novice since 1974 to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup when he did so last year and connections will be hoping he is as good as ever as he has just his 6th start over fences. He has been thrown right back in the deep end though with six potential opponents for the grade 1 contest.

Chief among those is defending champion Cue Card who is looking to win the Betfair Chase for the 3rd time in his career. The King George hero disappointed slightly on seasonal debut when only 3rd in the Charlie Hall Chase but we know how good he is when at his best and we should expect better from him at one of his favourite tracks.

Cue Card was beaten in the Charlie Hall by Irish Cavalier who ran a career best up at Wetherby to beat some excellent horses. This run will truly tell us whether or not the horse is a genuine Grade 1 horse over 3m but the trainer is in fine form right now andhe should run well.

Silvinicao Conti is another former Betfair Chase winner and as such cannot be ruled out with Champion Trainer Paul Nicholls in flying form right now. The dual King George winner ran ok for a long way in the JNWine Champion Chase earlier this month before tiring and he needs to prove that he isn't a spent horse this weekend.

Seeyouatmidnight is a fascinating entry after he destroyed Bristol De Mai up at Carlisle recently with the Sandy Thomson horse representing the the slightly younger chasers in this one. This is a big step up for the 8YO but he is open to more improvement and should enjoy the rain expected to fall with stamina on his side.
