We may be in the middle of a long hot summer but already we have the first casualty of the upcoming National Hunt season. Trainer Willie Mullins has reported that classy hurdler Pont Alexandre has picked up an injury at home which looks likely to rule him out of the entire season, including the 2014 Cheltenham Festival. It is a big blow for everyone at the Mullins stable with Pont Alexandre a highly though of contender with some very big races in mind over the coming year.
It is worth noting at this stage that Pont Alexandre is just five-years-old and is likely to return in 2014 as a big strong novice chaser to keep an eye on. the feeling has been that he is a chaser in the making and clearly connections are not willing to take a risk on such a talented young horse. Pont Alexandre started the Neptune Novices Hurdle as a wamrt favourite last season before fading slightly to finish third behind The New One and Rule The World. That was a slightly disappointing performance from a horse who had been hyped up all season but fences and a trip could suit the horse ideally when he returns to the track.
In other news from the Mullins stable. it has been announced that Pique Sous could be on target for a run in the Galway Festival at the end of the month. Pique Sous was good enough to finish third in a Champion Bumper in 2012 and looked in decent form recently when third on the flat at Bellowstown. He ran sixth in the Supreme Novices Hurdle at the festival last season and the Galway Hurdle is now a possible for the talented horse.
