Cheltenham Gold Cup Tips 2019: Big Priced Each Way Selection Can Run A Massive Festival Race

Bristol De Mai Won The Betfair Chase At Haydock And Could Be A Major Player In The Cheltenham Gold Cup

The Cheltenham betting reaches a crescendo on Friday afternoon with the big race of the week and we have asked Steve Ryder to make his selection for the Gold Cup...

Native River

Native River aims to become the first horse since Best Mate to retain the Gold Cup but he looks to hold strong claims given the recent rainfall. He has fantastic festival form with a 2nd in the National Hunt Chase in 2016, 3rd in this race in 2017 before winning it last year. He has failed to win so far this season but has run well to finish 2nd in the Betfair Chase at Haydock on good ground and 3rd in the King George at Kempton when unsuited by the track.

Unfortunately, his intended prep race in the Denman Chase was postponed and rearranged to Ascot so connections decided to come here fresh but that hasn’t been a problem in the past and he looks certain to be involved at the finish.

Presenting Percy

RSA Chase winners have a fantastic record in the Gold Cup the next season with recent winners including Denman, Bobs Worth and Lord Windermere. Presenting Percy comes into the race as a dual festival winner following his victory in the Pertemps Handicap Hurdle in 2017 and the RSA Chase last year. He clearly loves the place with his winning margins nearly 4 lengths and 7 lengths last year but this will be his first competitive start over fences since the RSA Chase last year given his prep run was in the Galmoy Hurdle at Gowran Park in January.

He holds outstanding claims in the race this year but backers would have to be worried about his preparation for the race.

Clan Des Obeaux

The progression that Clan Des Obeaux has made this season has been amazing with his rating rising from 157 to 173 in only three runs. He started off this season in the Betfair Chase when finishing behind the re-opposing Bristol De Mai, Native River and Thistlecrack but reversed form with all three rivals in the King George at Kempton the following month.

Sent off a relatively un-fancied 12/1 shot, Clan Des Obeaux travelled best into the race and won comfortably by 1 ½ lengths at the finish. He once again showed his ability in the rearranged Denman Chase at Ascot when winning easily by 11 lengths under a penalty but that was once again right handed. He still holds slight question marks about whether a true Gold Cup test over 3m2f at Cheltenham will suit but there is no doubt he is the most progressive chaser in this line-up.

The Other Contenders

Willie Mullins has four runners in his bid to win the Gold Cup for the first time. They all have very different profiles but all come into the race off the back of victories last time. Bellshill won the Irish Gold Cup at the Dublin Racing Festival last month but appears to usually show his best form going right handed, Kemboy has won his last four starts including the Savills Chase at Leopardstown in December but won’t get an uncontested lead in this race, Al Boum Photo won the Savills Chase well at Tramore in January but will have to improve to reverse form with Presenting Percy from the RSA last year and Invitation Only will have to prove he is up to Grade 1 class having won the Thyestes Handicap Chase last time.

Colin Tizzard also runs two horses alongside Native River in Thistlecrack and Elegant Escape. Thistlecrack for me still needs to prove the ability is still there given that he hasn’t won a race since the 2016 King George and I would prefer the chances of Elegant Escape given the recent rain fall.

He finished 2nd in the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury this season before a gusty victory in a soft ground Welsh National over 3m5f. He was staying on well at the finish in the Cotswald Chase behind Frodon here last time over 3m1f but with the extra distance and softer ground his stamina should mean he can be involved at the finish.

Might Bite was sent off favourite for this race last year where he ran well to finish 2nd on ground softer than ideal but has run no race in either the Betfair Chase or King George Chase this season and backers are relying on a wind operation working a miracle.

The forgotten horse for the race could prove to be Bristol De Mai for the bullish Nigel Twiston- Davies. His peak performances have both been in his Betfair Chase victories at Haydock where he has won by 57 lengths and 4 lengths but proved he could handle any ground when won the renewal this year on good ground beating four of his rivals who are all above him in the betting.

He ran well in the 2016 JLT Novices' Chase to finish 2nd before finishing 7th in the Gold Cup in 2017 when only a 6 year old. He could still be progressing as an eight year old and he looks overpriced at around 25/1 given he has beaten most of the line-up already this season.
