Champion Hurdle 2017 Horse By Horse Guide

Monday 13th March 2017
Yanworth

Few races get the juices flowing like the Champion Hurdle does and the day one feature tomorrow at Cheltenham is once again a mouth-watering prospect. It might lack the superstar names of Annie Power and Faugheen this season but that does make it a wide open contest for punters to sink their teeth into.

To help punters make their selections, i have taken a look at each runner in a rather helpful horse-by-horse guide...

Is Yanworth the one to beat in the Champion Hurdle?
Is Yanworth the one to beat in the Champion Hurdle?

Brain Power
Age - 6
Form - 1-3811

Hacked up in a handicap hurdle off 149 last time out at Ascot and has been kept fresh ever since. Wouldn't normally be good enough but should have more to come. Interesting.

Buveur D'Air
Age - 6
Form - 31-111

Novice Chasing career aborted for a tilt at the Champion Hurdle. Supreme 3rd last year looks top class and impressed in Contenders Hurdle last time out. Has the quality but price is short enough with ground a touch on the quick side.

Ch'Tibello
Age - 6
Form - 35132

Beaten twice by Yanworth this season but far from disgraced on both starts. Shouldn't be good enough but good ground shout suit and one or two will be playing each-way.

Cyrus Darius
Age - 8
Form - -1/1-41

Won the Morebattle Hurdle on the 2nd start after a long injury lay-off. Big ask given his injury problems but was very highly thought of one stage and the drying ground should suit.

Footpad
Age - 5
Form - -11242

Some good French form in the book and ran well when beaten by Petit Mouchoir last timer out. Will be finishing strongly but is likely to be outclassed. Ruby Walsh rides.

Moon Racer
Age - 8
Form - 11/211

Former Champion Bumper winner who has impressed this season in novice company. Big step up to open company, but connections think the world of him clearly, and he has the course form in the book.

My Tent Or Yours
Age - 10
Form - 2-3324

Runner-up in two Champion Hurdles and will get his ground this year. Will travel really well, but form has been only ok this season though, and you have to think his best chance is gone.

Nicky Henderson with My Tent, Buveur D'Air and Brain Power

Petit Mouchoir
Age - 6
Form - -23F11

The best of the Irish contenders this season with Ryanair Hurdle and Irish champion Hurdle wins to his name. A big improver but you do worry about the quality of the opposition he has faced.

Sceau Royal
Age - 5
Form - 6-1143

An excellent hurdler who will travel really well for Alan King and Daryl Jacob. Will love the quicker ground and is a fair price, but you would be surprised if he troubled the places.

The New One
Age - 9
Form - 4F-121

Former Neptune winner who hasn't been good enough in the last two Champion Hurdles. Form still good this season and will be giving his all, but have to think his best chance is gone.

Wicklow Brave
Age - 8
Form - 1/033-

A very talented horse who is a Cheltenham Festival winner over jumps, and has a Grade 1 to his name on the flat. Connections warrant serious respect but not been over hurdles since November 2015. Massive ask.

Yanworth
Age - 7
Form - 12-111

Neptune runner-up who has found a way to win the Christmas and Kingwell Hurdles this season. Will be flying home up the hill but will need every inch of the trip, and backers will be hoping he doesn't get shuffled too far back.

Race Prediction

  1. Brain Power
  2. Yanworth
  3. Buveir D'Air
