The recent cold weather across the UK has seen a number of meeting cancelled and with the Cheltenham Festival fast approaching it is starting to have a major affect on the plans of a number of runners. One trainer in particular who is having a headache is Nicky Henderson who is running out of options as he looks to get a run into 2010 Champion Hurdler, Binocular. The horse looked to be in good form when winning the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton over Christmas but Henderson is desperate to get another run into the horse. Binocular is well known as a difficult horse to get right but when he is at his best he is very difficult to beat as he showed at Cheltenham a couple of years ago. It appears that he is in dyer need of another run before Cheltenham and a clash with Hurricane Fly with only two or three options looking possible after his appearance in the recent Contenders Hurdle at Sandown was frozen off.
Henderson is unlikely to want to see Binocular clash with his other Champion Hurdle contender, Grandouet, in the Kingwell Hurdle at Wincanton while a trip to Gowran Park and the Red Mills Trial is also unlikely at this stage. Potentially the most likely destination for Binocular is the upcoming Morebattle Hurdle at Kelso, the weather will need to improve for that one though with the race just a few days away. A long trip to Kelso is not necessarily ideal for Nicky Henderson and Binocular but it maybe that they simply have no other option with Cheltenham fast approaching. There is no doubt that ante post Cheltenham punters will be eager to see Binocular have one more run before placing their Champion Hurdle bets. Hurricane Fly is the hot favourite in the market but we may learn a little more about the chances of Binocular over the next couple of weeks.
