Following the announcement of the entries for the Gold cup at Cheltenham the sponsors Betfred have decided to go Non Runner No Bet for the race. Cheltenham punters are always keen to keep their eye out for a concession like NRNB and it could prove to bee a particularly good promotion this season. There are a number of top contenders towards the head of the Gold Cup betting who are less than certain to take their chance and a number of punters will now be able to back them worry free. Any horse backed for the Gold Cup with Betfred who doesn't line up for the race on the 15th March will receive their stake back. The obvious horse to take a closer look at with the NRNB special in the front of your mind is the hugely talented Flemenstar. The Peter Casey trained in-mate has been hugely progressive over the past 18 months but connections and punters alike are still trying to work out his preferred trip. The trainer was sure he would get three miles but he tired after the last in the Lexus chase last time out to get beaten after travelling like the best horse for the majority of the race.
That run at Leopardstown has lead to some suggesting that Flemenstar would be better suited to the Ryanair Chase while others suggest he is quick enough to take on Sprinter Sacre in the Champion Chase. Taking that into account punters can now back Flemenstar for the Gold Cup safe in the knowledge that they will receive their money back if he does go to one of the other Festival races. The other horse to consider closely in the NRNB market with Betfred is Tidal Bay for Paul Nicholls. He stormed home late to beat Flemenstar in the Lexus Chase and despite the fact he is now 12 he looks to be better than ever. That Grade 1 winning form has to make him a live contender for the Gold Cup but connections have hinted that he could go to the World Hurdle instead as a replacement for injured stable mate Big Buck's. At the moment he is towards the head of the betting of both Cheltenham Festival races with the decision likely to be left as late as possible which means punters wanting to back him for the Gold Cup should do so with Betfred.
