The Triumph Hurdle is always one of the most exciting races at the Cheltenham Festival and already the 2012 renewal is shaping up to be one of the best yet. We have a new favourite for the race in Baby Mix after the Tom George trained horse won the key trial race at Cheltenham over the weekend in some style. The race is run over the same course and distance as the Festival Triumph Hurdle and such was the style of Baby Mix's win that he has to be a major threat. He took on and beat the hot favourite Hinterland at the International Meeting who had been all the rage for Cheltenham but he simply could not live with Baby Mix who was one of the most eye catching winners of the weekend. It was the first run in Britain for Baby Mix and although he was getting seven pounds from Hinterland he looked every inch a star of the future over hurdles.
The Triumph Hurdle is always won by a top class type and Baby Mix looks like he falls into that category after his win at Cheltenham. Jockey Paddy Brennan was bullish about him after the race and even said he had got to the front to early which indicates there could be more to come from the horse this season. One stat against Baby Mix is that none of the last four Triumph Hurdle winners had made their debut before December 17th but the bookmakers were quick to ignore that and installed him as the favourite for the Cheltenham Festival race. Some recent Triumph Hurdle winners include top class horses like Detroit City, Katchit and Celestial Halo among others and it will be interesting to see if Baby Mix can add his name to that illustrious list.
