The Jonjo O’Neill trained Albertas Run ridden brilliantly by champion jockey, AP McCoy won his second successive Ryanair Chase with a breathtaking performance that totally defied his early season form. As usual he was ran prominently from the start never really being out of the first two from but had the six year old Rubi Light for company until the last two fences when he began to assert his authority.
Jy Vole the mare trained by Willie Mullins began to threaten two out as did Kalahari King who had been held up at the rear by jockey Graham Lee, however neither were able to head Albertas Run who ran on strongly to keep them at bay, winning in the end by about three lengths. Kalahari King who had drifted badly in the market before the start ran his usual customary good race but also as usual found one to good for him at the Festival. Rubi Light ran on again to nudge Jy Vole out of the places. Poquelin, the Paul Nicholls trained 2/1 favourite ran well below par and finished out of the places.
For Albertas Run this was his third win at the Cheltenham Festival, having won this race last year and the RSA Chase in 2008. The win was the first at this year’s Festival for O’Neill but was the second of the day for the Champion jockey. He will next be seen in the Melling Chase in April at Aintree.
