Top Jockey Sam Twiston-Davies Has Ridden His 1000th Winner

Sam Twiston-Davies has joined the 1000 club this week with the top jockey riding Molliana to victory in Jersey for Neil Mulholland.

The 26-year-old has been an increasing presence in the plate for the Conkwell Grange handler in recent months and reached the landmark victory in good style with a five length victory in the 1m2f handicap at the Jersey venue.

One of the key men in the jockey room for the past decade, Twiston-Davies has enjoyed his fair share of ups and downs in the saddle but has picked up some major winners during is career.

A spell as the stable jockey to Paul Nicholls came to an end in favour of a move to a freelance career but the wins have continued to flow with 108 winners last season in the UK and already 13 to his name at home this term.

The Champion Chase winning rider is not shirt of rides in his new career as a freelancer with Mulholland, Dr Richard Newland and of course his father Nigel Twiston-Davies among the trainers eager to work with a jockey who has produced the goods on the biggest stage.

Seven winners at the Cheltenham Festival is a tally that will surely be added to in the near future but the 1000 winner mark is already a fine achievement for a young rider who is still likely to have some big days ahead of him.

We have picked out three of the most memorable wins for Sam Twiston-Davies so far...

Dodging Bullets - 2015 Queen Mother Champion Chase

A fine example of both horse and jockey turning up on the big day and producing the goods, Dodging Bullets gave Twiston-Davies the biggest winner of his career up to this point in the Queen Mother Champion Chase. A Tingle Creek and Clarence House Chase winner, the Paul Nicholls trained horse completed the set at Cheltenham to jubilant scenes and the part of the rider must not be ignored.

The New One - 2013 Neptune Investment Novices Hurdle

The New One clearly held a special place in the heart of the Twiston-Davies team and it is easy to understand why when you look at the career of a hugely consistent and top class animal. His big day in the sun came in 2013 when the horse claimed the Neptune ahead of future Grand National winner Rule The World and Sam Twiston-Davies was excellent in the saddle that day to drive the horse up the Prestbury Park hill.

Hello Bud - 2012 Becher Chase

Hello Bud may not have been the best horse Sam Twiston-Davies has ridden but he is probably the most popular.

The well loved chaser gave Twiston-Davies several major days in the early part of his career with a 5th place in the 2010 Grand National one of the highlights but the stand-out moment for the pair came on the hhis last ever run. The then 14-year-old produced a memorable display to win the 2012 Becher Chase under a brave front running ride from the jockey and it must be a win that holds a special place in the heart of the entire team.

A special horse that loved the National fences, Hello Bud was almost old enough to smoke that day and running out of the handicap but that didn't matter as he scored a famous win on his final start and at the same time it put the then 22-year-old jockey on the map.
