2019 Stayers Hurdle Runner By Runner Guide: Cheltenham Festival Race Preview Including Paisley Park And Faugheen

Faugheen Is A Key Contender For The Stayers Hurdle At The Cheltenham Festival

With last year’s winner Penhill missing the race this season through injury, Steve Ryder looks through the main contenders to his Cheltenham races crown.

Paisley Park

Paisley Park is unbeaten in four races since finishing down the field in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle last season. He made the step up from handicap company to win the Grade 1 JLT Hurdle at Ascot in December where he beat West Approach by two lengths on soft ground. Many raised doubts about the track before his run in the Cleeve Hurdle over this C&D but he answered those emphatically with a 12 length victory over West Approach despite conceding a penalty this time.

Paisley Park is the progressive horse in the line-up and as a seven year old could be a force in this race for many more years to come.

Faugheen

Faugheen has been an amazing horse throughout his career and has shown his liking for this course with victories in the 2014 Neptune and 2015 Champion Hurdle. Following his defeat in the Champion Hurdle last year it was feared that we had seen the best of him but he then beat Stayers Hurdle winner Penhill by 13 lengths at Punchestown on his first start at 3 miles.

Faugheen appeared to need his reappearance this season when beaten in the Morgiana Hurdle over 2 miles but was running well when falling behind Apple’s Jade at Leopardstown at Christmas. If that fall hasn’t had any lasting damage on Faugheen then he should be able to run with credit in the Stayers’ Hurdle this season.

Supasundae

Supasundae looks to be a horse who is best suited by an intermediate trip which puts connections in a tricky situation at the Cheltenham Festival. Jessie Harrington has said that the ground will decide his target but this looks the more likely target rather than the Champion Hurdle. He won the Coral Cup here in 2017 before finishing a close second last year in this race when it was a slowly run contest.

Given his ability to win over 2 miles, the race last year should have suited him and with a strong pace likely I would be surprised were he not to find one or two too good.

Black Op

Connections have decided to revert Black Op back to hurdles following defeats in two novice chases this season but he has a lot to do to reverse a 14 length beating by Paisley Park here in the Cleeve Hurdle. He ran well to finish 2nd behind Samcro in the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle last season but I believe he will struggle to hit the frame this season.

Top Notch

The decision has been made to run ‘little’ Top Notch in the Stayers’ Hurdle rather than the Ryanair Chase this season and I think it might prove a clever idea. He is a horse who always needs his reappearance run so a case can be made for why he can get closer to Paisley Park from the JLT Hurdle run and he has good previous festival form. He finished 2nd in the 2015 Triumph Hurdle, 5th in the 2016 Champion Hurdle before a 2nd place in the 2017 JLT Novices’ Chase behind an in-form Yorkhill.

Top Notch easily won a listed chase at Kempton in January and he could be an interesting runner in the Stayers’ Hurdle this year.

Kilbricken Storm

Kilbricken Storm was an unfancied 33/1 shot when winning the Albert Bartlett at the festival last year but he was given an enterprising ride that day and it is unlikely he will be allowed to dominate this race this season. He is another that comes here after going novice chasing and I think he will struggle.

Petit Mouchoir

Henry De Bromhead wants to run Petit Mouchoir here if Gigginstown will allow him to and he could prove a fascinating runner if allowed to take his chance. It would be his first run beyond 2m2f since his PTP victory in 2015 but could run well if getting the trip. He used to be a tearaway but has settled well in his races this year and could relish this step up in distance.

Others

Others to note would be last years beaten favourite Sam Spinner who has been disappointing this season, Bapaume who finished second behind Gold Cup hope Presenting Percy last time and West Approach who has twice finished behind favourite Paisley Park this season.
