Cross Country Handicap Chase Form

The key form race to review for the best form for the 2016 Cross Country Chase is the Cross Country race at the Cheltenham December meeting. This is one of the only chances during the year that many of the runners will get a chance to race in this fantastic race. There are very few cross country races during the season so any that do take place are well worth keeping a close eye on.

There are certain trainers worth following through the season with Edna Bolger being top of that list, the Irish trainer will always have a good cross country chaser on his books so his runners should be watched very closely.

Cross Country Handicap Racecard/Form 2016

Race OverviewBalthazar King, winner of this when it was a handicap in 2012 and 2014, would be a major player if at the top of his game on his first run since last year's Grand National, but he suffered a horrible fall then and it remains to be seen if that has left its mark. JOSIES ORDERS won both cross-country races here at the end of last year and is fancied to make it three out of three over C&D under the excellent Nina Carberry. Stablemate Cantlow is open to lots of improvement in this sphere judged on his old form and is feared most, while trainer Enda Bolger and owner JP McManus could well be celebrating a one-two-three with Quantitativeeasing also fancied to go well. Any Currency also has sound each-way claims, while Third Intention is the highest rated horse in the race but there is a big doubt about his stamina.[Ben Hutton]

Rare bad run over this C&D last time having been runner-up in this for the last two years. Rare bad run over this C&D when last seen in December, and weight carried on this unique course not as crucial as in regulation races, but worth noting that he's 23lb better off with Josies Orders than when second to that rival over C&D in November; runner-up in this for the last two years (when it was a handicap; good/good to soft) and could again have a big part to play; usual hood left off.

Won at Punchestown in January and third over C&D in December; more needed. Lightly raced under rules and he arrives on the back of a cross-country win at Punchestown in January; the experience gained on his C&D debut in December could help him improve upon that 14l third, but he's held by Josies Orders and Sire Collonges on that form and quite a bit more is needed.

First run since horrible fall in last year's National; won this race in 2012 and 2014. First run since suffering broken ribs and a punctured lung after falling in last year's Grand National; has won over this C&D four times, including this race in 2012 and 2014, and a major player if he's recovered from his horrible experience in April, but those tribulations are a concern.

Fair efforts on first two encounters with this C&D but probably lacking the required class. Second in the Kim Muir at last year's festival and fair efforts on his first two encounters with this C&D when third in November and fourth in December, but probably lacking the required class to get involved today.

Signs of encouragement on cross-country debut; could be lots more to come in this sphere. Became a bit disappointing for Paul Webber, refusing to race at Leopardstown in December, but signs of encouragement when second to Ballyboker Bridge on his stable/cross-country debut at Punchestown and Enda Bolger has rejuvenated similar types in the past in this sphere; based on old form there could be lots more to come in cross-country races, especially now upped in trip.

First cross country experience but plenty of ability and each-way claims if he takes to it. Not the most consistent (below par latest) and this is his first cross-country experience, which as imponderables go is a big one; however, if he takes to it he's got each-way claims judged on ability shown when third in the Becher Chase in December, and when winning last season's Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby.

Won both races over C&D before Christmas and strong claims as he bids for the hat-trick. Well beaten over hurdles last month but 3-3 in the cross-country races he's completed, including two wins over this C&D at end of last year (good/good to soft), beating Sire Collonges by 2l on the second occasion (same terms); there's the firm feeling that whatever task he and tremendous waiting-ride exponent Nina Carberry face up the run-in, they'll again find enough.

Three-time cross-country winner at Punchestown but career best needed to place here. Three-time winner on the cross-country course at Punchestown and placed over that C&D in November/December; might not be all that far away but he'll need a career best if he's to place in this company, and two runs over this C&D have yielded a heavy defeat and an unseat at the 11th.

Going well when carried out two out in this race last year; very much respected. Last month's defeat over hurdles not a concern as cross-country races are his game nowadays; comfortable win in this sphere at Punchestown in November and going well when carried out after two out in this race last year; Nina Carberry now prefers Josies Orders but still very much respected.

Won this last season but twice tailed off over C&D at the end of last year. Won this last season and respected on that form even though this race is no longer a handicap and he's worse off at the weights with the reopposing second and third; failed to match that form subsequently though and plenty to prove having tailed off in the two C&D races at the end of last year.

Improvement needed on cross-country debut and he's been tailed off the last twice. Won two in a row in November/December (2m6f chase/2m4f hurdle) but lots more needed on cross-country debut and twice tailed off over 3m (fences/hurdles) subsequently; plenty to prove, including stamina; blinkers left off.

Unlikely to be far away but probably he'll just come up short. One win from six completions over C&D and probable one or more of these will have his measure, as when a 2l second to Josies Orders over C&D in December, when last seen; however, that was yet another good run on this course and, unlikely to be far away, he's got sound place claims.

Highest rated runner in race but has to be a big question mark about stamina. Cross-country debut; highest rated runner in race and horses who wouldn't stay this far on a regular track can get away with it on a cross-country course due to stop-start nature of the obstacles; questionable whether he stays as far as 3m in normal races though so stamina has to be a worry.

Good chance this pacesetter will again lead over two out but likely vulnerable after that. Setting the pace he ran well for a long way in the two C&D races at the end of last year before fading; good chance there'll be another bold show and he'll again be in front two out, but likely vulnerable after that.

December 2015

The next big trial of the season was the Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham during the International Meeting and it was Josies Orders who put up a career best. Under another terrific ride from Nina Carberry, Josies Orders pulled clear of Sire Collonges on the run in and with Enda Bolger the master of training theses horses over the Cross Country races, he has to be a major player in March. This was a much tougher ask than his handicap win at Cheltenham last month and at just seven, there should be more to come from him.

November 2015

The Cross Country Races at Cheltenham through the season are great form guides for the big Festival race and we saw a very good winner of the race at the Open Meeting. Enda Bolger is famous for his Cross Country horses and he looks to have another nice one on his hands in the form of Josies Orders who won here in taking fashion. Given a terrific ride by Nina Carberry, Josies Orders weaved his way through the field to beat Any Currency and he has to be a contender at the Festival.
